1. Sketch your roof.
A general design for your roof should be sufficient but you need to be aware of its valleys and slopes. Putting in the locations of vents and fans for attic ventilation will give you a clearer picture.
2. Measure, Multiply, Divide
Take out your measuring tape and get the lengths and widths of your edges. This way, when you multiply them, you will have the resulting area. You can then divide this figure by the surface area of each single you need. This same formula should apply to the hip of your roof, if it has one.
3. Extras
After you add all the shingles you need, it will be safer for you to throw in about 10-15% more of the total number as extras. This way, you can avoid halting the repair and running back to the store to get supplies.
